company's history, it's a story of opportunity and dedication!
It was 1927.
Harry Lender peered out at the Statue of Liberty. The Lady
with the torch was a shining symbol of freedom and hope for
him and thousands of others who had traveled so far to begin a
new life in the "Golden Land" of opportunity. It was a day of
joy and also a day of sadness. His thoughts turned to his
wife, Rosie and their two sons left behind in Lublin, Poland.
They simply didn't have enough money for all to come to the
U.S. Harry Lender arrived on these shores short on dollars and
American vocabulary but long on Chutzpah! (Spunk!)
The history of Lender's Bagels was built on a family
dedication that began when Harry moved to New Haven,
Connecticut where he founded one of the nation's first bagel
bakeries outside of New York City. From this humble beginning
has emerged the success story of today's Bagel Boom that has
spread across the North American continent.
The bagel, a so-called Ethnic Product, was soon being used by
friends and neighbors who were Ethnics of their very own. The
palate of an Italian or Irishman, Russian or even Mayflower
descendant did not react much differently than the palate
developed in Lublin!
The crusty outside and chewy inside gave the Lender's bagels
its distinct personality and uniqueness. Lender developed the
first nationally distributed frozen bagel and was the first to
make frozen flavored bagels. In 1955, six bagels were put into
a plastic bag and for the first time sold in supermarkets!
And so more than 80 years after the young immigrant Harry
Lender was greeted by the Statue of Liberty, the business he
began with little more than a craft and a dream is now bigger
and better than ever! Where else but in America?
