How Vlasic® became America's favorite pickle is truly an
American success story. It's the story of how a Polish
immigrant family, a great idea, a big taste, and a funny stork
won their way into the hearts – and stomachs – of generations
of hungry consumers.
Frank Vlasic came to America in 1912 from his homeland of
Poland to build a better life for his family. After saving
every dime he could from his $2 a day car foundry job, Frank
established a creamery business in Detroit. He eventually
turned it over to his son, Joe.
Joe expanded the family milk and cheese business into selling
Polish pickles spiced with garlic and dill. Later, Joe’s son,
Bob, joined the effort and together they started testing a
whole new idea: Polish pickles sold in smaller individual
glass jars (instead of large barrels) . . . and in 1942 the
Vlasic Pickle brand was born!
Over the next 20 years, pickle consumption increased
tremendously and Joe and Bob grew Vlasic into America's number
one pickle.
Then, in 1974, Vlasic’s well-known brand icon, the Vlasic
Stork, first flew out of America's television screens with the
message that crunchy "Vlasic is the best-tasting pickle I ever
heard!"
The lovable Vlasic Stork with a Groucho Marx voice has been a
welcome family friend ever since - delivering juicy goodness
to sandwiches, burgers, snacks and more - all over the world. |
